International ramifications

Recent events in Manus Island confirm the Government of Australia has lost credibility.

Australia is now seen as an abuser rather than defender of human rights. Decades of international leadership and skilled diplomacy have gone out the window.

At a human level, treatment by Australia of innocent people, seeking safety from war and persecution, is abhorrent and unacceptable in a modern world. Damage caused is already irreparable, but leaders and communities have to continue to demand that 'our' government cease this abuse now. No-one should be abused for the sake of simplistic policy adherence. Leaders from all sectors must seek to bring those in Manus and Nauru to Australia and ensure they are treated with the dignity they deserve as holders of human rights. Many in the Macedon Ranges will welcome them.
