X Factor winner and all-round nice guy Reece Mastin has been spending a whole lot of time in Kyneton this year and has become something of an adopted local.

Performing around the traps with local singer-songwriter Taylor Sheridan led to Reece being introduced to his current manager Ged Stokes - also a Kynetonite.

Reece has just finished recording his new album, Suitcase of Stories, in a Riddells Creek studio with Ricki Rae, who engineered Reece's first album after his X Factor win in 2011.

The English born singer-songwriter is used to an urban setting but has enjoyed his time in the Macedon Ranges which has allowed him the kind of quietude that is conducive to writing music.

"It's been really refreshing to be up here, in general for musicians there's always so much going on personally - which is why we write music - so it's nice to be able to get away to somewhere like Kyneton and be really in my head and honest," he told the Express.

Reece and Taylor are set to perform together in a series of upcoming gigs, including one on Friday night in Ballarat (see tomorrow's paper for details).

Reece will be performing tracks from his new album as well as earlier songs, plus some covers and some Aussie songs they've messed with and made their own.

Taylor is playing bass and sings both together with Reece and as support, performing his own tracks as well.

"Taylor and I have been playing together this year and with my drummer (Mitch Rodgers) we've been a three-piece band for a while now and it's really developed a cool sound," Reece said.

"This is the first record where I've set up my own band and played my own guitar.

"I really feel like we've made something very special, it's a lot of rock 'n' roll, a lot of loudness, but some pretty moments as well."

And Taylor agrees there's a great dynamic between the three musicians.

"It's one thing to get to play music but to play music with some of your best mates is just a bonus," he said.

TheMidland Express has two tickets to the boys' gig at Ballarat on Friday to give away to one lucky reader. See tomorrow's paper for details.

The boys will also perform other shows later in November including One Electric Day with John Farnham.
