Hurtful divisions

I have no doubt that it will come as a shock and disappointment to many that some opponents of marriage equality in arguing that marriage is for procreation ('I shall vote no', Opinions, September 12), the marriages of those past child-bearing age are somehow considered at best second rate and at worst unacceptable.

Who of us does not know of family or friends who have united in marriage knowing that they could not have children or, perish the thought, chose not to have children?

It makes me wonder how many Australians would have objected only a few decades ago when the marriage law was altered to allow couples of which one is an indigenous person, to marry. This postal survey is, as predicted, laying bare hurtful divisions in our community that would have remained dormant had our parliamentarians done the job they are paid for.
