After ending the home and away season undefeated, and defeating Melton Centrals in the semi final, Gisborne Youth Girls Blue faced off against Sunbury Kangaroos in the 2017 AFL Goldfields Riddell District Youth Girls Grand Final.
On an unusually mild day in Ballarat, the game started with a high level of intensity from both sides, and after an even contest, Sunbury entered quarter time one point in front.
The Gisborne girls found some rhythm in the second quarter, kicking two goals three behinds, and keeping Sunbury goalless, entering half time 14 points in front.
The third quarter was a very tight tussle, with Gisborne scoring just one point to enter the last quarter 15 points up.
The final quarter was exciting and nail-biting at the same time, especially when Sunbury scored a goal in the first minute to reduce the margin back to nine points. When they scored again five minutes later, reducing the margin to just three points, the Gisborne girls dug deep, withstood the Sunbury advances, and played with level heads to close out the match, 4.6 (30) to Sunbury 4.1 (25).
Loree Newton played a great game for Gisborne, being awarded best on ground by the umpires. Abbi Bolt was a great focal point at full forward, finishing with two goals, with Caitlyn Brown and Grace Krstev, kicking one goal each. Among the best players were Molly Warburton, Alex Cairney, Steph Larsen, Bridie Durham-Ashdown and Olivia Peterson.
