Last year more than 200 people took part on the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Walk at Woodend. People are again encouraged to participate this coming Sunday.

Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group is hosting a community walk to shine a light on suicide prevention.

Held on World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, walkers' 3km journey will begin at Woodend Children's Park, Nicholson Street, and continue into the Woodend township and along Five Mile Creek before returning to the park for breakfast.

The theme of the day is 'Take a minute, change a life'. Talking, listening, sharing, caring and assisting others to find help if needed is one way to do this. A caring, connected community can only help as a suicide prevention strategy.

A group of community members have joined forces with council and community organisations to continue to build a robust response to suicide prevention in the Macedon Ranges - this walk will be the fourth one for the Macedon Ranges and is one of those responses.

Last year more than 200 people walked 'Out of the shadows and into the light' in Woodend.

The event aims to remember those loved and lost to suicide, supporting family and friends, to acknowledge and support those who have attempted suicide or have suicidal thoughts, to raise awareness and to reduce the stigma around mental health issues and suicide prevention in our local and surrounding communities.

The event is free. Registration is from 8.30am at the park.
