Cruelty and lies

I was so moved to read Gregory Clark's letter in last week's Midland Express ('Traumatising and inhumane', Opinions, June 6). It is horrifying to hear our government spread lies about "fake refugees" and "asylum seekers who can't be bothered doing their paperwork".

Greg's letter exposed the truth of what we force our asylum seekers to endure in the name of simply finding a safe place to live. It is ludicrous to suggest that these people simply can't be bothered filling out forms to apply for safe haven.

I am proud to live in a part of the world where so many of the churches, charities and local people are committed to welcoming refugees who are fleeing terrorism and war zones.

These are fine, beautiful people who deserve to live their lives in peace just as we do. I will never support a political party that believes in detention and cruelty towards asylum seekers.
