In 2018, Bendigo Art Gallery will hold the fifth exhibition in its annual Going Solo exhibition series.

Launched in 2014, Going Solo reinforces the gallery's commitment to fostering and promoting the careers of contemporary Australian artists living and working regionally by showcasing the best of local contemporary art alongside significant national and international exhibitions.

Castlemaine photomedia artist Jessie Boylan has been selected as the 2018 Going Solo artist.

Working closely with gallery curators Boylan will produce an ambitious new body of work to be presented in a solo exhibition.

"This is a great affirmation of my practice, as well as a great opportunity to push my work into new and challenging territory with the guidance and support of Bendigo Art Gallery," she said.

Through her thought-provoking work, Boylan explores issues relating to human impacts on the land and communities in relation to environmental and social devastation.

Considering human persistence, resilience and resistance in the face of adversity, Boylan applies a documentary approach to her subject matter.

In the development and production of her work, Boylan engages directly with communities affected by disasters and emergencies - both natural and man-made - including climate change, biodiversity loss, earthquakes, floods, fires, droughts and nuclear testing programs.

Boylan has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and has completed postgraduate studies in fine art. She is a member of the Atomic Photographers Guild, an international group which aims to render visible all aspects of the nuclear age and is a key artist in Nuclear Futures, an Australia Council-funded community arts project, which is exploring the legacy of the nuclear age through creative arts. Boylan is currently a lecturer in Photography at La Trobe University, Bendigo.
