I wonder how many people realise that the wheels are already in motion for all Australians to lose the right to have a landline?
The Productivity Commission has an inquiry underway into the Telecommunications Universal Service Obligation, which is fulfilled by Telstra. Draft recommendation 3.1 proposes that the government should phase out this obligation ASAP. The obligation to provide payphones would also be affected, and looks like the first service to be axed.
These recommendations may be of little consequence to people on NBN fixed line connections. But what about everybody else?
The Commissioner at Melbourne's hearing said that people may still submit comment. Whether they will listen is another story.
