Tourism Macedon Ranges Inc (TMR) recognises that Hanging Rock is an icon to the region that must be maintained, preserved, respected and shared. This requires sustainable income that will contribute to the maintenance of our beloved 'Rock'.
TMR, as the independent tourism body for the Macedon Ranges, is positive in its support of development of sustainable tourism for our area, including the proposed development in the East Paddock at Hanging Rock.
TMR is confident that with the proper processes of consultation with the public and the natural concern and care for the environment that the facilities proposed will enhance the Hanging Rock precinct. TMR applauds council's decision to open a conversation with the community if a development application is received for a tourist-based facility on the East Paddock at the extreme end of the Hanging Rock council-owned area.
TMR is confident that the Shire will err on the side of caution when it comes to any development, as has been demonstrated by other tourism projects eventually granted with many pages of conditions. The Shire's utmost concern about the environmental impact and residents' anxiety has been shown in past decisions. TMR supports tourism businesses and recognises the flow-on effects the industry has to the sustainability of so many businesses in the Macedon Ranges. Tourism is the largest industry in the Macedon Ranges and is worth some $170 million dollars to our economy of which Hanging Rock Reserve makes up in excess of $14 million. The visitors to our area not only contribute to those obvious tourism businesses such as cafes, restaurants and accommodation, but also the businesses that service these, such as plumbers, bakers, butchers etc.
Tourism Macedon Ranges will encourage the council to keep the tourism operators of the region and the whole of our community informed and involved as this proposal progresses.
